There is a story in this book about a Muslim prison gang that would walk up to different inmates and ask them: "What color is God?" If anyone answered "White," they would beat them up. They moved through the prison this way — intimidating, threatening, looking for the wrong answer. Then they approached a devotee inmate and asked the same question.

H.H. Chandramauli Swami became involved with the ISKCON Prison Ministry in the early 1980s, visiting prisoners and holding programs in jails, writing letters to inmates, and sending them Srila Prabhupada's books. Holy Jail is the result of that documentation — a 265-page hardbound compilation that covers over thirty years of the ISKCON Prison Ministry's work. It is not a theoretical book about spirituality in difficult circumstances. Srila Prabhupada once said: "If you give me a chance to speak to all the members of the jail, it is quite possible for me to turn them into ideal characters." That statement — made decades before the ISKCON Prison Ministry was formally established — is the philosophical seed from which the entire ministry grew.

The Vedic understanding is that the conditioned soul is, by nature, already in a kind of captivity — bound by karma, by the modes of material nature, by the false identification of the self with the body. A physical prison is, in this sense, only a more visible version of the captivity that every conditioned soul lives within. And the key that opens both — the outer cell and the inner one — is the same: Krishna consciousness, the chanting of the Holy Name, and the mercy of the Vaishnava community.
